Omaha Gears Up for a Summer of Amazing Theatre

The summer theatre season is upon us, and BroadwayWorld in Omaha has the scoop on some of this summers no-to-be-missed productions.

Spring Awakening at the Blue Barn Theatre in downtown Omaha is earning rave reviews, with theatergoers referring to the show as “amazing… the best locally produced musical seen in some time, surpassing some Broadway tours in excellence.” Spring Awakening runs May 11th - June 17th, with performances most Thursdays thru Saturdays at 730pm, and Sundays at 6pm. The shows have been selling out every weekend since its opening, so call and get your tickets early. Although a show for mature audiences only, this is a show not to be missed. Hairspray at the Omaha Community Playhouse opens this Friday. With a history of crowd pleasing hit musicals under their belt, the Omaha Community Playhouse is sure to have the audiences tapping their toes and dancing in the aisles every night to the tunes of this Tony Award winning musical. Hairspray runs May 25th – June 24th, with performances most Wednesdays thru Saturdays at 730pm, and Sundays at 2pm. Featuring a fresh faced cast full of talent, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this show sell out many performances. Seussical – The Musical opens June 1st at the Rose, one of the largest and most well known children’s theatres in the nation. Featuring some of the greatest and most loveable Dr Seuss characters, including the Cat in the Hat and Horton the Elephant, Seussical is the perfect show for kids of all ages. Performances run June 1st – 17th. Annie Get Your Gun at the Sumptur Amphitheatre begins performances in July. For those looking for a new or different theatre experience, this beautiful outdoor amphitheatre is the place to be. With half the seating set on the concrete with chairs and the other half open for theatergoers to bring their blankets and lawn chairs and sit on the grass, this theatre under the stars is a wonderful way to spend the night with friends and family. Past productions such as Fiddler on the Roof and Oklahoma were extremely successful, and Annie Get Your Gun is sure to be an equally enjoyable experience for the whole family. Express Yourself at the Holland Performing Arts Center. On July 14th, this one night only engagement will feature show stopping performances by Broadway’s Tituss Burgess, Tony Award Winner Jarrod Emick, Nicholas Rodriguez, Deidre Goodwin, Sarah Pfeifer, Tyler Hanes, alongside some of Omaha’s best up and coming performers. Singing in the Rain at The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley, Nebraska is sure to be a crowd pleaser for the whole family. Based on the much loved movie musical of the same name, Singing in the Rain is often referred to as one of the best musicals of all time --- a classic that focuses on the Hollywood transition from silent films to “talkies,” and made famous by the incomparable Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly. Auditions for Singing in the Rain are scheduled for May 27th & 29th at 630pm. Performances run July 20 - 22, 26 - 29 & August 2 – 5.
