Omaha Performing Arts presents Cox Music & Movies, featuring The Karate Kid and the retro pop ukulele sounds of Omaha band All Young Girls Are Machine Guns. This summer's first free Cox Music & Movies event will be held on Friday, June 22 in the Courtyard of the Holland Performing Arts Center. Music begins at 7:45 p.m. followed by the movie at dusk, or approximately 8:45 p.m.

The Karate Kid, starring Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and Elisabeth Shue, is the story of a teenage boy, Daniel, who moves to California from New Jersey with his mom but has a hard time fitting in. He soon becomes the target of local bullies who are all adept in karate. Daniel seeks the help of his neighbor, Mr. Miyagi, a grand master of martial arts, to learn karate so he can better defend himself. The Karate Kid has been rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America.

Prior to the movie, the audience will be treated to the sounds of All Young Girls Are Machine Guns, the award-winning brainchild of ukulele-wielding, bow-hunting, beating-of-the-drum-type misfits. The band is led by Rebecca Lowry on tenor ukulele and vocals and features an extraordinarily talented group on bass ukulele, upright bass, electric guitar, organ, drums, bells and violin.

The Holland Performing Arts Center's Courtyard will open at 7:30 p.m. Grass seating is available and blankets and chairs are welcome. Guckenheimer, the official food service provider for the Holland Performing Arts Center, will provide concessions, such as hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, nachos, beer, wine and soft drinks ranging from $2.00 to $6.50 during the events. No outside food, drink or pets are permitted.

There will be two more Cox Music & Movies events this summer: Friday, July 20 with the Lincoln-based female country group, The Betties, featuring banjo, upright bass and dobro with a 1940s, Patsy Cline-esque sound followed by the 2011 movie The Muppets (PG), where Jason Segal and Amy Adams reunite the Muppets in an effort to save the Muppet Theater; and Friday, August 10 with the UNO Faculty Jazz Combo playing jazz standards sprinkled with Latin styles, funk and vocals, followed by the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark (PG), starring Harrison Ford as adventure-seeking archeologist Indiana Jones on a quest for the Ark of the Covenant.
